What is a Quilt/Topquilt?
A quilt is similar to a sleeping bag but open on the back. Quilts are typically about 20% lighter than sleeping bags with similar insulation properties. The idea behind a quilt is that insulation on the back is unnecessary since it gets compressed under the sleeper, losing its insulating capability. The actual insulation underneath comes from a sleeping pad or, when hammock camping, an underquilt.
Quilts are especially popular in hammock camping but are also gaining traction among other outdoor enthusiasts. Many people find quilts a solution for the claustrophobic feeling of a sleeping bag. It is also easier to get into a quilt compared to a traditional sleeping bag.
When used with a sleeping pad, many people utilize the included elastic straps to attach the quilt to the pad. These straps can also be used to close the quilt on the back, creating a mummy-style sleeping bag.
The lightweight Simple Quilt is made from durable yet ultralight 10D nylon. It is insulated with high-quality Climashield Apex, one of the most highly regarded synthetic insulation materials available. Although Apex is slightly heavier than down, it offers several advantages.
Weighing around half a kilogram (depending on size and insulation thickness), the quilt remains light relative to its size and thermal performance. Even when wet, Apex insulation retains warmth and does not clump. It also has excellent compressibility, quickly regaining its loft when unpacked.
The quilt has small loops along its long edges for elastic straps. These loops allow the quilt to be secured around a sleeping pad or the user. The top edge features a drawcord with an adjustable buckle at the center of the chest, allowing the top of the quilt to be cinched around the shoulders to trap heat inside.
This Apex Topquilt features a fixed footbox, meaning it cannot be fully opened into a blanket.
The quilt comes with a fine mesh storage sack, which can also be used as a bug net, gear pouch, or even a pillow when stuffed with clothing. A separate waterproof dry bag is not included, but we recommend using a waterproof bag with a capacity of at least 8 liters for transport.
