Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo is a 740 g one-person ultralight tent for lightweight backpacking and hiking. The tent offers approximately 2.4 m² of sleeping space, a 0.8 m² vestibule and a peak height of 124 cm. It is pitched with one adjustable trekking pole or a separately available 124 cm tent pole.

The hexagonal shape and steeply sloping sides help direct wind around the shelter and reduce the accumulation of water or light snow on the canopy. The single centre-pole construction keeps the weight low while leaving the interior efficiently available for one hiker and their gear.

Please note: The seams are not factory sealed. They must be treated with a seam sealer suitable for silicone-coated polyester before the tent is used in rain. Seam sealer is not included.

Spacious one-person ultralight tent

Lunar Solo is designed for one person and their equipment. The floor area is approximately 2.4 m², with a length of approximately 228 cm and a maximum width of approximately 121 cm. This provides ample room for a sleeping mat, sleeping bag and smaller items of equipment.

A recessed gear area is located along the long rear wall. Small essentials can also be stored in the internal mesh pocket.

Vestibule for equipment

A vestibule of approximately 0.8 m² is positioned along the long side of the tent. It provides sheltered storage for footwear, a backpack and other equipment.

In good weather, the vestibule can be opened fully, allowing the large mesh door to provide an open view and improved ventilation. When closed, the vestibule protects the entrance from rain and wind.

Do not use an open-flame camping stove inside the tent. Cooking in the vestibule also presents fire, heat and carbon monoxide risks.

Silpoly fabric stretches less when wet

The Lunar Solo canopy is made from 20 denier silicone-coated polyester, commonly known as silpoly. Polyester absorbs little moisture and stretches less when wet than many silicone-coated nylon fabrics. This helps the canopy retain its tension in rainy conditions.

The floor is made from stronger 40 denier silicone-coated polyester. Both the canopy and floor have a stated hydrostatic head of 3,000 mm.

Bathtub-style floating floor

The floor rises approximately 15 cm above ground level, forming a bathtub-style barrier against splashback. A strip of insect mesh connects the floor to the canopy.

The floor is not rigidly tensioned to every canopy tie-out point. Its floating construction allows it to move slightly with the sleeper and the ground, reducing constant strain on the fabric and potentially lowering the risk of damage from sharp objects.

A separate groundsheet is still recommended on rocky, rough or abrasive ground. Always clear the pitching area of sharp stones, branches and cones before setting up the tent.

Floating canopy and adjustable ventilation

The Lunar Solo canopy normally sits slightly above the ground. Air can circulate around the tent through the lower gap, the surrounding mesh strip and the large mesh door.

The canopy height can be adjusted by changing the trekking pole length:

• a higher pitch improves ventilation
• a lower pitch provides more protection from wind and driving rain

The front edge must remain above the ground to maintain sufficient airflow through the mesh door. The manufacturer’s recommended pitching height is approximately 124 cm.

High vent and large mesh door

A high-level vent helps warm, humid air escape from the shelter. The large zippered mesh door makes entry easier and improves ventilation, particularly when the vestibule is kept open.

Lunar Solo is a single-wall tent, so condensation may form on the inside of the canopy in humid, cold or still conditions. Careful pitching, maintaining the lower ventilation gap and keeping equipment away from the canopy help reduce condensation-related problems.

Pitched with one trekking pole

Lunar Solo is pitched with one adjustable trekking pole or a separately available tent pole. The recommended pole length is approximately 124 cm.

The trekking pole is positioned inside the tent with the pointed tip inserted into the reinforced pole pocket and the handle resting on the ground. The pole is set at a slight angle to leave more room around the entrance.

The trekking pole, tent pole and stakes are not included.

How to pitch Lunar Solo

The floating canopy and floor make Lunar Solo slightly different to pitch than a conventional pole tent. It may take a little practice at first, but once the correct staking order and angles are familiar, setup becomes quick and straightforward.

1. Choose a level location where water will not collect during rain.
2. Clear the ground of sharp stones, branches and cones.
3. Position the rear of the tent towards the prevailing wind.
4. Close the vestibule before pitching.
5. Loosen all guy lines almost to their full length.
6. Stake the first corners in the order shown in the manufacturer’s instructions.
7. Adjust the trekking pole to approximately 124 cm and place it in position.
8. Stake the vestibule line and the remaining corners.
9. Tighten the lines gradually until the canopy is even and taut.
10. Check the tension and retighten the tent after approximately 30 minutes.

Tips for a successful pitch

The position of the stakes directly affects interior space, ventilation and canopy tension. The guy lines should follow the direction of the canopy seams and roof lines so that the different panels are tensioned evenly.

If the tent edges sag, the interior feels restricted or the ventilation gap disappears, check:

• the length and angle of the trekking pole
• the distance of the stakes from the tent
• the direction of the guy lines in relation to the seams
• that one corner has not been tightened much more than the others
• that the front edge remains sufficiently above the ground

The tent also has two additional side-wall tie-out points for windier conditions. Extra guy lines are not included. Using these tie-outs can also pull the canopy farther away from the sleeper and create slightly more interior room.

Wind-resistant hexagonal construction

The hexagonal floor shape and steeply sloping sides help direct wind around the shelter. The central trekking pole supports the structure and improves its ability to withstand wind loading.

The rear of the tent should be positioned towards the prevailing wind. In windy weather, all six primary tie-out points should be secured carefully and the additional side tie-outs should be used.

Lunar Solo is a three-season tent, not a dedicated winter or mountaineering shelter. Heavy snow should not be allowed to accumulate on the canopy.

Seam sealing before use

The seams of Lunar Solo are not factory sealed. The tent is not fully rainproof until the seams have been treated.

Use a seam sealer suitable for silicone-coated polyester and treat the seams and tie-out points indicated in the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow the treatment to dry completely before packing or using the tent.

Ordinary seam tape or adhesive intended for polyurethane-coated fabrics may not bond properly to silicone-coated polyester.

The main strength of Lunar Solo is the amount of space it provides for its approximately 740 g weight. The 2.4 m² sleeping area, generous seated height and vestibule make it a spacious one-person ultralight tent.

It requires more careful pitching than a conventional pole tent. Stake position, trekking pole height and even guy-line tension directly affect interior space, ventilation and weather resistance. Once the pitching method has been learned, Lunar Solo provides a lightweight, compact and well-ventilated shelter for three-season hiking.
