About Sagan Water Filter Straw

The XStream™ Deluxe Straw Water Purifier is a compact and highly effective water purification solution for camping, hiking, travel, and emergency preparedness. This hand-pump-assisted drinking water filter removes bacteria, protozoa, and viruses, making it suitable for situations where access to clean drinking water is uncertain.

Lightweight and easy to carry, the XStream™ Deluxe Straw is designed for outdoor use where reliable water purification is essential. It works directly as a drinking straw or with the included hand pump for filling a clean container with filtered water. The included drinking hose is approximately 24″ long, and with the extension hose the total length reaches approximately 48″ (121 cm), allowing comfortable use from the edge of a lake, river, or stream without needing to kneel or lie down.

Advanced Filtration Performance

The XStream™ Deluxe Straw uses Sagan’s patented Journey™ Filter technology, based on electroadsorption rather than traditional mechanical filtration. The positively charged filter media attracts and retains contaminants smaller than viruses, making it highly effective for outdoor and emergency use.

The filter removes:

• 99.9999% of bacteria, such as E. coli
• 99.99% of protozoa, such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia
• 99.99% of viruses

The filter also helps reduce microplastics, heavy metals, chlorine, and other unwanted contaminants while improving water clarity and taste.

Simple to Use

No chemicals, batteries, or complicated setup are required. Drinking through the filter requires slight suction, but the flow remains efficient and practical for field use.

The hand pump allows you to:

• wash hands
• share clean drinking water easily

The filter can purify approximately 250 gallons (around 1000 liters) of heavily contaminated water. When filtering clear water or tap water, actual lifespan may be significantly longer.

When to Change the Filter

Filter replacement depends on water quality and usage volume. Since the filter works by attracting contaminants like a magnet, it gradually becomes clogged over time. When water flow becomes significantly slower or water no longer passes through sufficiently, it is time to replace the filter. Even if only a small trickle remains, the filtered water is still safe to drink. The filter can be dried after use and stored for future use without reducing its effectiveness. Properly stored, it does not expire.

How It Works – Nano Fiber Technology

The patented filtration media technology used in all Sagan water purification products is based on electroadsorption of contaminants — not mechanical filtration.

The electro-positively charged filter media acts like a magnet, attracting and retaining contaminants as small as viruses when water comes into contact with the filter.

The media itself is made from multiple layers of nano-alumina-coated glass fibers containing powdered activated carbon (PAC) and antimicrobial silver protection. The positively charged media field is layered between spun-bond polyester, which strengthens the pleated filter material.

This proprietary filtration media provides high flow rates and effective contaminant removal. It has been shown to remove viruses, bacteria, cysts, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), disinfection by-products, endotoxins, natural organic matter, and other sub-micron particles.
