The Sagan Life AquaBrick water filter for emergency preparedness and motorhomes combines an 11.35-litre water container, a DuraFlo water purification filter and a manual pressure pump. The system can be used both to store water and to purify fresh water from lakes, rivers, rainwater collection systems and other non-saline sources without electricity or batteries.
AquaBrick is designed for homes, cabins, motorhomes, caravans, boats and base camps. It is not a small backpacking water filter, but a water storage and purification system intended for larger quantities of drinking and cooking water.
Water storage for emergencies and travel
One AquaBrick container holds 11.35 litres of water. According to the manufacturer, this is approximately enough water for one person for three days.
The low-profile, stackable shape makes it easier to build and organise a water reserve in a storage room, motorhome, caravan, boat or cabin. The ergonomic handle also makes the container easier to carry when filled.
The AquaBrick container is made from food-grade, BPA-free high-density polyethylene. The same container can be used either for storing clean drinking water or as part of the AquaBrick water purification system.
How long can water be stored in an AquaBrick?
The manufacturer recommends replacing water stored in an AquaBrick approximately once a year. For long-term storage, fill the container with clean tap water, close the lid carefully and mark the filling date on the container.
Store the water in a cool place away from direct sunlight. The taste of stored water may change over time even when the container was clean and properly sealed. Stored water can be passed through the AquaBrick purification system before use if required.
Before the first filling, rinse the container with warm water and allow it to dry. After filling, check that the lid is properly sealed before moving the container into storage.
Water purification without electricity
AquaBrick works with a manually operated air pump. Untreated water is poured into the container, and the DuraFlo filter, hoses and filtration lid are attached. The hand pump is then used to pressurise the container.
The air pressure forces water through the DuraFlo filter and into the dispensing hose. The system does not require electricity, batteries or a mains water connection.
When pressurised, the system filters approximately 3.78 litres of water in two minutes, or around 1.9 litres per minute. The flow rate may decrease as pressure drops or if the water contains large amounts of sediment.
What does the DuraFlo filter remove?
According to the independent laboratory results stated in the manufacturer’s operating manual, the DuraFlo filter achieves the following reduction rates:
- 99.9999% of bacteria
- 99.99% of viruses
- 99.99% of protozoan parasites, including Giardia and Cryptosporidium
According to the manufacturer, the filter also reduces lead, heavy metals, chlorine, certain chemical contaminants and unpleasant tastes.
The reduction of chemical substances depends on the substance, concentration and water quality. AquaBrick should therefore not be treated as a universal solution for all chemicals, industrial pollutants or unknown toxins.
Filter capacity
The stated maximum capacity of the DuraFlo filter is approximately 2,650–2,700 litres. When filtering water that may contain viruses, the stated capacity is approximately 2,080–2,100 litres.
Actual filter life depends on water quality, turbidity, sediment levels, pre-filtration, maintenance and operating conditions. Very cloudy water can clog the filter considerably earlier.

How to use the AquaBrick water filter
- Pre-filter cloudy water through a clean cloth or another coarse pre-filter.
- Fill the container with non-saline water, leaving approximately 5 cm of air space below the opening.
- Attach the DuraFlo filter to the short hose and connect it to the underside of the filtration lid.
- Connect the hand pump and dispensing hose to the lid.
- Close the lid carefully and keep the container upright.
- Pressurise the container by squeezing the hand pump approximately 10–15 times.
- Open the dispensing valve and add pressure with a few additional pumps when required.
Allow a dry filter to soak in water for approximately five minutes before filtration. The operating manual also recommends flushing at least approximately one litre of water through the filter before drinking the filtered water.
Cloudy water must be pre-filtered
Sand, mud, leaves and other solid particles should be removed before water is poured into the AquaBrick container. A clean cloth or a separate coarse pre-filter can be used for this purpose.
Pre-filtering does not make the water safe to drink on its own. Its purpose is to protect the DuraFlo filter from sediment and help extend its service life.
Cleaning and storage after use
Always release the pressure through the dispensing valve before removing the lid or hoses. Rinse the filter, hoses and other filtration components with clean, filtered water and allow them to air-dry thoroughly.
Wash the container with warm water and mild detergent when necessary. Rinse it carefully and allow it to dry before storage.
When storing an empty, dry container, attach the standard storage lid only loosely to allow ventilation.
Do not scrub, brush or pressure-wash the outer surface of the DuraFlo filter. Mechanical cleaning may damage the filtration medium and reduce its performance.
When should the filter be replaced?
According to the manufacturer, the DuraFlo filter should be replaced when the flow rate has decreased by approximately 50–75% from its original level or when the stated maximum capacity has been reached.
A slower flow rate does not automatically mean that contaminants are passing through the filter. However, a significant reduction in flow indicates that the filter is becoming clogged and should be replaced.
Important limitations
- Use the system only with non-saline fresh water.
- AquaBrick does not desalinate seawater.
- Do not use the container for flammable liquids.
- Do not filter water suspected of containing fuel, radioactive substances or high concentrations of industrial chemicals.
- Keep the container upright while it is pressurised.
- Do not exceed 20 pump compressions during one pressurisation cycle.
- Release all pressure before removing the lid or hoses.
- Always choose the cleanest available freshwater source.
