Alcohol stove – ultralight X-Boil with windscreen

X-Boil is an ultralight alcohol stove for hiking and backpacking. It is also commonly referred to as a spirit burner or alcohol burner. X-Boil combines low weight, wind protection and a stable pot support – all useful features for ultralight hiking.

X-Boil is designed for use with lightweight cooking pots, especially titanium cookware. It is available in several sizes for different pot diameters. Compatible pots and the corresponding X-Boil models are listed further down the page.

Stainless steel windscreen

The X-Boil windscreen is made from thin stainless steel. During transport it packs almost flat, but for use it is formed into a cylinder around the burner and pot.

The windscreen has slots for the supplied pot supports as well as ventilation openings for combustion. It also has small holes through which suitable titanium tent stakes can be inserted and used as alternative pot supports.

The windscreen packs into a very small space. It can be rolled inside the cooking pot or placed against the inside wall of the pot. If you prefer not to store the windscreen inside your cookware, it can also be carried around the outside of the pot and secured with an elastic band.

Pot supports and installation

Three stainless steel pot supports are included. They are small hook-shaped components that attach to the slots around the upper edge of the windscreen.

First form the windscreen into a cylinder. Then place the three pot supports evenly around its upper edge. The supports position the pot at the appropriate height above the burner.

The small pot supports can be stored inside the burner during transport.

Suitable titanium tent stakes can also be inserted through the holes in the windscreen. In this configuration, the stakes support the pot instead of the supplied pot hooks.

Aluminium alcohol burner with graphite felt

The X-Boil alcohol burner is a small aluminium fuel container. Inside is a piece of graphite felt that absorbs the alcohol.

The graphite felt holds the liquid fuel in place, so the alcohol cannot move around inside the burner as freely as it would in an open cup. This reduces the risk of fuel spilling if the burner is accidentally tilted.

The burner and small components can be stored inside the cooking pot together with the rest of the stove system.

In addition to alcohol, the X-Boil system can also be used with fuel gel and Esbit-type solid fuel tablets. Remove the graphite felt from the burner when using a fuel other than alcohol.

Using the alcohol stove in dry conditions

An alcohol stove uses an open flame, so particular attention must be paid to fire safety and the surface beneath the stove. On dry or easily combustible ground, place the burner on a stable, non-combustible, heat-resistant surface.

Suitable protection may include a metal plate, titanium plate or another heat-resistant barrier intended for this type of use. Before lighting the stove, make sure no fuel has been spilled around the burner.

Do not use the alcohol stove where or when open fires are prohibited. Never leave a burning stove unattended.

Please note: There must be at least approximately 18 mm of clearance between the bottom edge of the pot and the lowest part of the pot handle so that the X-Boil windscreen can fit correctly around the pot.
