Down Topquilt – Ultralight Simple Quilt 870+ FP by Liteway
Liteway Simple Quilt 870 FP 10D is a down-filled topquilt designed for hammock camping, tent use and other lightweight sleeping systems. Unlike a traditional sleeping bag, a topquilt has no insulated back section or full-length rear zipper. Down compressed beneath the sleeper loses much of its insulating ability, so insulation underneath is provided by a sleeping pad or, in a hammock, an underquilt. This reduces weight without compromising the practical performance of the sleep system.
Attachment loops along the long sides allow the quilt to be secured to a sleeping pad using the included straps. This helps keep the edges in place and reduces warm air escaping during the night, particularly in colder conditions.
A down topquilt for three-season camping
The quilt has a closed footbox that keeps the feet warm and helps prevent cold air from entering at the foot end. The down chambers in the footbox run horizontally, while the chambers in the upper section run vertically. This construction helps keep the down distributed across the intended areas during use.
Liteway uses what the manufacturer describes as a warm-seam construction, designed to reduce cold air passing through the stitched areas. Lightweight mesh used inside the chamber structure also helps reduce the overall weight of the quilt.
Hydrophobic 870 FP down
The quilt is filled with hydrophobically treated 870 FP down produced in Ukraine. A high fill-power rating indicates good loft and recovery, but fill power alone does not determine how warm a quilt will be. Insulation also depends on the amount of down, chamber construction and overall dimensions.
The hydrophobic treatment slows moisture absorption and helps the down retain its loft in damp conditions. It does not make the down waterproof, so the quilt should still be protected from rain and prolonged exposure to moisture.
The filling consists of 80% goose down and 20% duck down. The down-to-feather ratio is 90/10.
Temperature rating and conditions of use
The manufacturer states a comfort temperature of −2°C. This rating assumes that the user is wearing warm thermal underwear or fleece clothing and sleeping on a well-insulated sleeping pad with a high R-value. The temperature rating has not been stated as an EN or ISO-standard laboratory result.
In practice, the suitable operating temperature also depends on the user’s sensitivity to cold, clothing, sleeping-pad insulation, humidity, wind and the protection provided by the shelter. In a hammock, reaching the stated temperature also requires sufficient insulation underneath, such as a suitable underquilt.

Can the topquilt be used in a hammock?
Yes. In a hammock, the topquilt works best together with an underquilt, which provides insulation beneath the sleeper.

Can the manufacturer’s temperature rating be relied upon?
The manufacturer’s stated temperature of −2°C is not based on an EN or ISO-standard test. Actual performance depends on factors such as clothing, insulation underneath, humidity and the user’s personal sensitivity to cold.
Why is a topquilt lighter than a sleeping bag?
A topquilt omits the rear zipper and the insulation beneath the sleeper because compressed down does not insulate effectively. This reduces weight without sacrificing practical warmth, provided that the insulation underneath is suitable for the conditions.
What is included?
