Foam Sleeping Pad 3 mm – Gramlite EVA Foam Pad 1/8″ Skalmo

A sleeping pad for ultralight backpacking. In the United States, this type of EVA foam pad is commonly known as a 1/8″ foam pad, mega UL thinfoam, or mega lite pad.

What is a thin foam sleeping pad used for?

A thin foam pad is a highly versatile piece of gear.

It can be used on its own as a minimal summer sleeping pad, or as additional insulation in colder conditions. Many hikers use a lightweight EVA foam pad to protect their inflatable ultralight sleeping pad from sharp stones and branches.

It can also be used as a frame sheet in frameless backpacks, adding structure and improving carrying comfort. In addition, it works well as a sit pad or as an anti-slip layer under a bivy.

Extra safety in cold conditions

A thin foam pad is a useful backup on cold trips.

It provides quick additional insulation if the weather turns unexpectedly. For hammock campers, it can be an important safety item—if the hammock fails, there is still something to sleep on.

A similar situation can occur if an inflatable pad gets punctured. In these cases, a foam pad can make a significant difference.

General characteristics of foam pads

Foam sleeping pads are durable, lightweight, and insulating.

They continue to insulate even if punctured or damaged
They are very lightweight
They are simple and reliable

However, foam pads take up more space than inflatable ones. They are typically carried outside the backpack, attached with straps.

In terms of comfort, foam pads are clearly less cushioned than inflatable pads.

Note: Very thin foam pads are not indestructible. They can tear, and sharp objects such as branches may puncture them.
