Sagan Life RapidFlo™ is a virus-filtering water purifier with a hand pump for hiking, travelling and emergency preparedness. The Journey™ filter reduces bacteria, viruses and protozoa, while the XStream™ Spray Pump allows purified water to be pumped directly into a bottle, cup or other container.
RapidFlo differs from the XStream Deluxe Straw in the way it is used. XStream also allows water to be drawn through a long drinking hose, while RapidFlo is primarily a lightweight pump filter. It can be used to serve water to another person, fill a drinking bottle or provide purified water for rinsing food or hands.
Lightweight pump filter for outdoor use and emergency preparedness
RapidFlo is suitable for hiking, day trips, canoeing, fishing, travelling and as part of an emergency kit for the home or vehicle. It works without electricity, batteries, iodine, chlorine or water purification tablets.
The manufacturer states a total system weight of approximately 176 g. The filter and pump form a narrow unit that can be carried in a backpack, outdoor bag or emergency kit. According to the manufacturer, the fully assembled system is approximately 56 cm long. The supplier’s stated length of approximately 22 cm appears to refer to the filter unit itself.
What does the virus-filtering water purifier reduce?
RapidFlo uses the same Journey™ water purification filter as several other Sagan Life systems. According to independent laboratory testing stated by the manufacturer, the filter reduces:
- 99.9999% of bacteria, including E. coli
- 99.99% of viruses
- 99.99% of protozoa, including Giardia and Cryptosporidium
According to the manufacturer, the filter meets or exceeds the US EPA requirements for microbiological water purifiers. The Journey filter has been tested for up to 250 US gallons, or approximately 946 litres of water.
The manufacturer also states that the filter reduces certain heavy metals, chemical contaminants and taste and odour problems. Its effectiveness against chemical substances depends on the substance, concentration and water quality. RapidFlo is not a universal solution for all industrial chemicals or unknown toxins.
How does RapidFlo work?
The Journey filter is placed in a non-saline freshwater source. By squeezing the hand pump, water is drawn through the filtration medium and discharged from the pump outlet as purified water.
The pump can be used to:
- dispense water directly for drinking
- pump water into a bottle or cup
- serve water to another person
- provide purified water for rinsing food or hands
According to the manufacturer, the XStream Spray Pump makes it possible to spray and dispense water without drinking directly from the water source. The supplier states a flow rate of approximately 2 litres per minute, although actual flow depends on pump operation, water turbidity and filter condition.
How the Journey filter works
According to Sagan Life, the filtration system uses CAM technology, based on an electroadsorptive filtration medium. The positively charged material attracts and binds very small contaminants in the water, including particles in the size range of viruses.
RapidFlo is therefore not based solely on conventional mechanical pore filtration. Instead of being described mainly by a micron rating, its performance is stated through laboratory-tested reduction rates for bacteria, viruses and protozoa.
Filter capacity and service life
The stated capacity of one Journey filter is 250 US gallons, or approximately 946 litres. The supplier rounds the capacity to approximately 1,000 litres in its product information.
Actual service life depends on water quality. Sand, mud, algae, limescale and other particles may clog the filter before the stated capacity is reached. Always choose the clearest available water source and pre-filter visibly cloudy water through a clean cloth or separate pre-filter.
Pre-filtering does not make water safe to drink by itself. Its purpose is to remove larger particles and help extend the service life of the Journey filter.
When should the RapidFlo filter be replaced?
The filter binds contaminants and gradually becomes clogged. Replace the filter when:
- the stated capacity of approximately 946 litres has been reached
- the water flow slows considerably
- pumping becomes noticeably more difficult
- the water output is no longer practical
RapidFlo uses the same replaceable Journey filter as the Sagan Life XStream, AquaPod and AquaDrum systems. The compatible replacement filter in the supplier’s range is product number 707681.
How to use the RapidFlo water purifier
- Choose the clearest available non-saline freshwater source.
- Pre-filter the water if it contains visible sand, mud or other particles.
- Connect the Journey filter and hand pump according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Place the filter intake into the water.
- Direct the pump outlet into a clean bottle, cup or other container.
- Repeatedly squeeze and release the pump until water begins to flow.
Keep the purified-water outlet separate from untreated water. Do not allow the pump outlet or clean container to come into contact with the source water.
Cleaning, drying and storage
Disconnect the filter and pump after use. Rinse the parts that come into contact with purified water according to the manufacturer’s instructions and allow them to dry thoroughly.
A wet filter should be air-dried before long-term storage. Do not seal a damp filter in an airtight bag for an extended period. Once completely dry, the filter can be stored in a clean, sealed package until the next use.
Filter durability and freezing
The Journey filter is not a conventional hollow-fibre filter. According to earlier information from the manufacturer, its construction withstands drops and freezing better than hollow-fibre filters.
However, the manufacturer does not state exact freezing conditions or permitted freeze-thaw cycles on the current RapidFlo product page. The filter should therefore not be intentionally exposed to freezing. After use, it is advisable to dry the filter thoroughly before long-term storage.

RapidFlo or XStream Deluxe?

XStream Deluxe Straw includes long hoses and a mouthpiece, allowing water to be drawn directly from the source or pumped into a container.
RapidFlo is a suitable choice when the priority is a lightweight and straightforward hand-pumped water purifier. XStream Deluxe is better suited to users who also want a long drinking hose and the option to drink directly from the source.
Important limitations
- Use only with non-saline freshwater.
- RapidFlo does not remove salt from seawater.
- Always choose the cleanest available water source.
- Pre-filter visibly cloudy water or water containing sediment.
- Keep purified-water components separate from untreated-water components.
- Do not use water suspected of containing dangerous concentrations of fuel, industrial chemicals or radioactive substances.
- Do not intentionally expose a wet filter to freezing.

Our thoughts
RapidFlo is a lightweight option for pumping purified water directly into a clean container without a long drinking hose or electric pump. In addition to personal use, it is suitable for situations where purified water needs to be provided to another person. An important difference compared with many lightweight hiking filters is the manufacturer’s stated reduction of viruses. Reaching the stated filter capacity nevertheless depends on choosing the clearest possible water source and pre-filtering visibly cloudy water.
