APEX Topquilt Ultralight Simple Quilt APEX 10D | Liteway

APEX Topquilt Liteway Simple Quilt APEX 10D is an ultralight synthetic insulated topquilt for hammock camping, tent camping, hiking and lightweight backpacking. Its hoodless, open-back construction saves weight where insulation would otherwise be compressed beneath the sleeper, while a sleeping pad or hammock underquilt provides the insulation underneath.

Simple Quilt APEX 10D is available with three Climashield® APEX insulation weights: 136 g/m² with a comfort temperature of approximately +4 °C, 170 g/m² at approximately +1 °C and 203 g/m² at approximately −2 °C. This allows you to choose the insulation level that best suits your intended conditions and personal sensitivity to cold.

What is a quilt or topquilt?

A quilt is similar to a sleeping bag but without a fully insulated back. The idea is simple: insulation compressed underneath the sleeper loses much of its insulating ability, so there is little benefit in carrying that extra material.

When sleeping on the ground, insulation underneath you is provided by your sleeping pad. In a hammock, the same job is usually handled by an underquilt or sleeping pad.

The open construction also makes a topquilt lighter and gives the sleeper more freedom of movement than a conventional sleeping bag. It can be particularly comfortable for people who find traditional sleeping bags restrictive or who change sleeping position frequently during the night.

APEX Topquilt for hammocks and sleeping pads

Liteway Simple Quilt APEX can be used both in a hammock and with a sleeping pad in a tent or other shelter. Attachment loops along the long edges allow the quilt to be secured around a sleeping pad using the supplied attachment system.

This helps keep the quilt correctly positioned around the sleeper and reduces cold draughts entering from the sides when changing position during the night.

Climashield APEX synthetic insulation

Simple Quilt uses Climashield® APEX, a continuous-filament synthetic insulation manufactured in the USA. Its continuous-fibre construction helps the insulation maintain its structure and loft through repeated use and compression.

Climashield APEX is also particularly useful in damp and variable outdoor conditions. Synthetic insulation is less sensitive to moisture than down, making it a practical option for trips where keeping sleeping equipment completely dry may be challenging.

The manufacturer’s comfort temperatures provide useful guidance when comparing the insulation options. Actual sleeping comfort depends on several factors, including individual sensitivity to cold, clothing, wind, humidity and the insulation provided by the sleeping pad or hammock underquilt.

Fixed footbox

Simple Quilt APEX has a fixed footbox that forms an enclosed insulated section around the feet. This helps retain warmth around an area that many sleepers find particularly sensitive to cold.

This is one of the main differences between Simple Quilt and Liteway’s Sleeper Quilt. Simple Quilt is designed primarily for sleeping and cannot be opened completely flat as a blanket or converted into a poncho.

Warm seam construction

Liteway uses a warm seam construction designed to reduce cold spots through the insulation layer. This allows the Climashield APEX insulation to work effectively across as much of the quilt’s surface as possible.

Adjustable upper edge

The upper edge can be adjusted around the sleeper to help reduce warm air escaping around the shoulders. This becomes particularly useful as temperatures drop towards the quilt’s intended comfort range.

10D Nylon DWR Ripstop fabric

The Simple Quilt is made from lightweight 10D Nylon DWR Ripstop. The thin 10D fabric helps keep overall weight low, while the ripstop construction provides additional strength for outdoor use.

The DWR treatment helps the surface repel light moisture. The quilt is not waterproof, however, so it should be protected from water during transport, preferably inside a waterproof dry bag or backpack liner.

Mosquito cover and storage bag

The quilt is supplied with a mesh mosquito cover that can also be used for storing the quilt. Its mesh construction allows the insulation to remain uncompressed during storage and the cover can also be used as protection against mosquitoes and other insects.

A separate waterproof transport bag is not included. For use on the trail, we recommend carrying the quilt in a suitable waterproof dry bag or other waterproof storage system.
