Description
Folding XPE Sleeping Mat 281 g BasicNature
BasicNature Foldable is a folding foam sleeping mat designed for summer camping, hiking and general outdoor use. The closed-cell XPE foam does not absorb water, dries quickly and maintains its insulating properties even on damp ground.
At 281 grams, the mat is lightweight for a full-length sleeping mat measuring 182.5 cm. This makes it suitable for lightweight backpacking, day hikes and as a backup layer alongside or underneath an inflatable sleeping pad. The folding design makes packing simple and allows the mat to double as a seat pad during breaks.
The manufacturer states an R-value of 1.8. In practice, this provides insulation suitable for warm-weather use. During cooler spring and autumn conditions, many users will require additional insulation or a second sleeping pad.
One advantage of XPE foam is its simplicity. The mat contains no valves, air chambers or seams that could fail in the field. The included carrying strap keeps the mat securely folded and makes transport easier between campsites.

Our Take
Many lightweight backpackers still rely on foam sleeping mats despite the popularity of inflatable pads. The reason is simple: a foam mat always works. It does not need to be inflated and cannot fail due to a puncture that would render it unusable.
An R-value of 1.8 is sufficient for typical summer use, but in Nordic spring and autumn conditions the mat often works best as an additional insulating layer underneath another sleeping pad rather than as the only sleeping system. Its low weight also makes it a practical seat pad that can be placed on rocks, roots and wet ground without concern.
