M64 Loue 2-Person Nylon Taffeta Open-Fire Shelter FinnRover
M64 Loue 2-person FinnRover is a lightweight Finnish open-fire shelter from the FinnRover Wilderness Collection. The M64 is also known as the Kemppinen model, and its background is closely linked to the Lapland Loue used by Kullervo Kemppinen.
The M64 is made from green Nylon Taffeta fabric weighing approximately 70 g/m². The inner surface is silver-coated and the attachment points are reinforced with leather. The complete Loue weighs only around 1 kg, making the M64 the lightest 2-person Loue in the FinnRover range.
M64 Loue 2-person FinnRover – lightweight Finnish open-fire shelter
A Loue is a traditional Finnish open-front shelter recognised by its wedge-shaped front and curved rear section. The upper part can be suspended from a tree or supported with a pole, while the rear section is secured to the ground with stakes.
The open front is an essential part of the Loue design. Traditionally, the shelter is used with an open fire positioned in front of it, while the rear section provides protection from wind.
Several Loue shelters can also be pitched around the same campfire, facing each other so that one fire can serve several shelters.
M64 Kemppinen – returning to the roots of the Loue
The FinnRover M64 is also known as the Kemppinen model. According to FinnRover, the M64 follows a Loue design found among the belongings of Kullervo Kemppinen.
The original Loue sewn by Laila Kemppinen was made entirely from brown nylon. The FinnRover M64 retains the traditional structure but uses green Nylon Taffeta fabric with a silver-coated inner surface.
Silver-coated inner surface
The inside surface of the M64 Loue is silver-coated. The reflective surface helps reflect light and radiant heat back towards the inside of the shelter.
When used with an open fire, this helps make more effective use of the radiant heat from the fire.
Nylon Taffeta 70 g/m²
The M64 is made from lightweight Nylon Taffeta fabric weighing approximately 70 g/m².
The light fabric keeps the total weight of the complete Loue at only around 1 kg. The attachment points are reinforced with leather, which forms part of the traditional FinnRover Loue construction.
Same 2-person dimensions as the M16 and M34 Loue shelters
M64 Loue 2-person FinnRover uses the same basic 2-person dimensions as the FinnRover M16 and M34.

The final usable dimensions depend on the pitching angle. The position and shape of the Loue can be adjusted using the attachment points according to weather conditions and the campsite.

The FinnRover M64 weighs only around 1 kg, making it the lightest 2-person Loue in the FinnRover Wilderness Collection.
Easy to pitch without a fixed frame
The upper part of the Loue can be suspended from a suitable tree or branch or supported with a separate pole. The rear section is secured to the ground with stakes.
In traditional use, a suitable long pole found at the campsite can also be used as the main support, reducing the need to carry a separate pole.
Stakes and a support pole are not included unless otherwise stated in the package contents.
Using an open fire with the Loue
The Loue is designed for use in combination with an open fire. Always consider the distance from the fire, wind direction, wind strength and sparks when pitching and using the shelter.
Nylon is a synthetic material, so sparks and embers can damage the fabric. Always follow current wildfire warnings, local regulations and landowner permissions when lighting an open fire.
The history of the Finnish Loue
The FinnRover Loue range continues a long Finnish open-fire shelter tradition. The history of the modern Loue dates back to a shelter developed by A.E. Järvinen in the 1930s. In the 1960s, Kullervo Kemppinen made his own Lapland Loue based on Järvinen’s design.
The M64 is closely connected to this Kemppinen stage of the Loue tradition and represents FinnRover’s interpretation of the lightweight nylon Loue.
Finnish manufacturing and design
According to FinnRover, the products are entitled to use the Key Flag and Design from Finland marks as symbols of Finnish work and Finnish design.
FinnRover Loue shelters are manufactured in Finland by Laatuteltta Ky Vilkman.
