M05 Loue 2-Person Open-Fire Shelter FinnRover
M05 Loue 2-person FinnRover is an open-front shelter based on the long tradition of the Finnish loue and belongs to the FinnRover Wilderness Collection. The M05 version is produced in a small limited-edition batch using the Finnish Army M05 field camouflage pattern.
FinnRover M05 is made from Mistral Action SA polyester fabric with a PU coating. The fabric weighs approximately 145 g/m² and the complete Loue weighs approximately 2 kg. The M05 uses the same 2-person dimensions as the FinnRover M64, M16 and M34 Loue shelters.
M05 Loue for 2 people – a traditional Finnish open-fire shelter
A Loue is a traditional Finnish open-front shelter, recognised by its wedge-shaped front and curved rear section. The upper part can be suspended from a tree or supported with a pole, while the rear section is secured to the ground with stakes.
The open front is an essential part of the Loue design. Traditionally, the shelter is used with an open fire positioned in front of it, allowing the heat from the fire to radiate directly into the shelter.
Several Loue shelters can also be pitched around the same campfire, facing each other so that one fire can serve several shelters.
Pitch the Loue with the back towards the wind
The position of the Loue should be planned according to wind direction. In a traditional setup, the rear of the shelter is positioned diagonally towards the wind. This helps protect the occupants from the wind while allowing the airflow to carry campfire smoke away from the open front.
The height and angle of the shelter can be adjusted during pitching. A lower setup can provide more protection in rainy weather, while a higher setup can make it easier to benefit from the warmth of the fire in colder conditions.
The history of the Finnish Loue dates back to the 1930s
The history of the modern Loue dates back to an open-fire shelter developed by Finnish author and outdoorsman A.E. Järvinen in the 1930s. Järvinen presented the shelter as protection against wind and rain for use in combination with an open fire.
In the 1960s, Kullervo Kemppinen made his own Lapland Loue based on Järvinen’s design. The basic form of today’s FinnRover Loue shelters follows Kemppinen’s version as closely as possible.
The basic form remains consistent throughout the FinnRover Loue range, while materials and model versions vary. The M05 combines this traditional structure with a modern PU-coated polyester fabric in Finnish M05 camouflage.
Finnish Army M05 field camo
The M05 version uses the Finnish Army M05 field camouflage pattern. It is a limited-edition version in the FinnRover Wilderness Collection.
Mistral Action SA – PU-coated polyester fabric
The M05 Loue is made from Mistral Action SA polyester fabric. The material has a PU coating and weighs approximately 145 g/m².
The manufacturer describes the fabric as waterproof polyester. However, the complete Loue is not sold as a fully waterproof shelter.
Seams sewn with swelling thread
The seams of the M05 Loue are not taped. According to FinnRover, the seams are sewn using swelling thread.
For this reason, FinnRover does not sell the M05 Loue as a completely waterproof shelter. According to the manufacturer, the same principle applies to its other Loue models.
Outdoor tested by the manufacturer
FinnRover reports that a test version of the M05 Loue was left outdoors for almost a month. According to the manufacturer, no water came through the seams during the test period, and the Loue also withstood wind and other summer weather conditions.
This is the manufacturer’s own experience with the test shelter and should not be interpreted as a guarantee of complete waterproofness in all conditions.
Same dimensions as the M64, M16 and M34 Loue shelters
The FinnRover M05 uses the same 2-person basic dimensions as the FinnRover M64, M16 and M34.

The final usable dimensions depend on the pitching angle. The position and shape of the Loue can be adjusted using the attachment points and pitching angle according to weather conditions and the campsite.
For two people
The M05 is a 2-person Loue with enough room for two people to lie underneath it. It uses the same basic 2-person dimensions as the FinnRover M64, M16 and M34 models.
Easy to pitch without carrying a dedicated frame
The upper part of the Loue can be suspended from a suitable tree or branch, or supported with a separate pole. The rear section is secured to the ground with stakes.
In traditional use, a suitable long pole found at the campsite can also be used as the main support, reducing the need to carry a separate centre pole.
Stakes and a support pole are not included unless otherwise stated in the package contents.
Using an open fire with the Loue
The Loue is designed for use in combination with an open fire, but the synthetic polyester fabric of the M05 requires particular care. Keep the fire at a safe distance and always consider wind direction and sparks before lighting a fire.
Sparks and embers can damage polyester fabric. Always follow current wildfire warnings, local regulations and landowner permissions when using an open fire.
